Sally Smith – A model for young business women of today

In today’s workplace, one would like to think that diversity would be more prevalent than in the past.  However, women are still in a small minority when it comes to higher executive positions in business.  Not only that, but there are still statistics showing that women are being paid less than their male counterparts.  Regardless of those facts, there are still some successful female Chief Executive Officers in businesses familiar to many.  One of these women would be Sally Smith, Chief Executive Officer, and Director of Buffalo Wild Wings, stationed out of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Graduating from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accounting, Sally has been the Chief Executive Officer and president of Buffalo Wild Wings since July of 1996.  Prior to that, she worked as the Chief Financial Officer between the years of 1994 and 1996.  She has worked as a Chief Financial Officer of the company Dahlberg, Inc., from 1983 to 1994, maintaining a career as a successful businesswoman.

Since her work with Buffalo Wild Wings began, the company has grown.  When she began in 1994, it was composed of thirty-five locations, a number that has grown tremendously to four hundred and forty locations today.  Her work has been praised through award accommodations including an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the Midwest Region award in 2001, the 2005 Restaurant Executive of the Year, and the 2005 University of North Dakota Sioux Award, just to name a few.

Women such as Sally Smith show that not only can women work well in high end positions such as Chief Executive Officer; they also give younger women a model to work towards.  In a world where business is mainly run by men, it can be disheartening to women at times.  However, when seeing someone as successful as Sally who has not only made a name for herself, but has helped the company grow immensely, it shows how capable anyone can be if they work hard enough at it.
